Crabbing & Clamming
Catch your own Dungeness crab and bay clams at Yaquina Bay
Yaquina Bay is one of Oregon's best spots for Dungeness crab and bay clams. Rent a boat or crab from the Newport piers. It's a quintessential Oregon Coast experience—and there's nothing like eating crab you caught yourself.
What You Can Catch
🦀 Dungeness Crab
Oregon's famous Dungeness crab. Open year-round in the bay (check regulations for ocean crabbing seasons).
🦪 Bay Clams
Butter clams, littleneck clams, and cockles. Dig at low tide in the mudflats and sandbars.
Getting Started
📜 License Required
You'll need a shellfish license ($10 for residents, $22.50 for non-residents). Available at sporting goods stores, Walmart, or online at ODFW.
🛶 Rent Gear
Several shops on the Newport Bayfront rent crab rings, bait, and even boats. You can also crab right from the public docks.
⏰ Best Times
Crabbing: Incoming tide brings crabs into the bay. Clamming: Low tide exposes the flats. Check tide charts before you go.
